I don’t know about you, but I need some fun.

I’m so very tired of the negativity the world is being bombarded with daily. Politics brings out the worst in otherwise ordinary people who secretly thrive on hate. The anonymity of social media brings out the trolls and makes them bold.

Constructive, informed criticism involves backing up statements with fact. It leads to debate. That I can handle. Tearing down what others are attempting to build without offering suggestions for improvement is malice. And name calling is meant to dehumanize.

There’s no fun in that.

I write about human relationships, and relationships are complex. And my characters, no matter how quirky, possess real human values and beliefs. My main characters understand that compromise is healthy, whereas malicious deconstruction and dehumanizing name calling are not.

I love writing small town romances for this reason. Small towns involve people working together. They don’t always agree—conflict is what makes a compelling story—but community always comes first. I write about good people who are flawed, but they aren’t malicious.

But the world is crazy right now, and it can be emotionally exhausting to live inside a character’s head, even one who’s a good person.

Which is why I needed to write something fun.

Welcome to Burning Scrub, Montana where Westworld meets Disneyland deep in the West Pioneer Mountains.

Book one in the Roped in Time series, The Cowboy Contract follows Beau and Belle on their journey to happily ever after. It’s available here.

The second book in the series, Time’s Up, Cowboy, is the story of Malika George, a Fish out of Water, and Jayce Hanson, a victim of Unrequited Love. It’s an Opposites Attract story in a Small Town Romance setting. The book releases June 23rd and you can preorder it here.

A little about Time’s Up, Cowboy:

Malika arrives in Burning Scrub against her will. She’s determined to make the best of it, even if it’s not where she wants to be. She’s equally determined to escape an arranged marriage. Jayce, meanwhile, thinks he’s in love with another woman. He wants a partner who will fit into the community and the lifestyle he loves. He’s also got the next generation of ranchers to consider. Malika? She just wants to be loved.

Malika was a wonderful character to write. In her mind, every setback is an opportunity. She’s so full of hope, and so eager to love, and yet so very practical, that I can’t help loving her, too. She’s the person I’d love to be.

Jayce, while much more reserved, is the steadying influence she needs. He doesn’t want her to change, even if he doesn’t always approve of her choices. He doesn’t plan to change for her either. But they share the same values, and they have the same dreams. Love is incredibly important to them.

The blurb:

Free spirited heiress Malika George is abandoned in Burning Scrub by her older brother, who has arranged a marriage for her, and he needs to make sure she doesn’t try to run—again—before the big day. Malika has her own plans for her future, a strong desire for independence, but only a vague understanding of the value of money.

Cowboy rancher Jayce Hanson, whose heart was recently broken, agrees to babysit a former client’s baby sister for the summer. The sister turns out to be more of a babe than a baby, and Jayce has a hard time remembering that he’s in love with another woman, even if the other woman doesn’t love him.

Malika embraces the role she’s been assigned for her Wild West adventure, even if it’s an adventure she doesn’t want, and even if Burning Scrub is unprepared for her enthusiasm. Before the summer is over, she becomes a true woman of the West. Meanwhile, Jayce? He discovers a woman of the West, one unpredictable and wild, is the real woman he wants.

We have bank robberies, kidnappings, and angry Indians masquerading as Mexicans. Oh, yes. And a love story. What more could a reader ask for?

Tell me how you feel about using an off-the-grid, Wild West theme park situated in a former ghost town as a romantic setting.

And remember, we’re here to have fun.
